Title An exploratory study on students’ perception on the Van Hiele model of geometric thought and the factors of its efficacy. / Jonathan Zhen Qiang Seet
Abstract The Ministry of Education in Malaysia has a constant emphasis on the quality of education present in all the schools across the nation. The mathematics curriculum is designed to foster reflective learners and develop mathematical skills, but Malaysia did not fare particularly well in the most recent international PISA and TIMSS assessments. Taking a leaf from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan and their implementation of the can Hiele model of geometric thought in their syllabus, this study focuses on the students’ perception of this model and the factors that may affect its efficacy in the Malaysian context. This paper adopts a qualitative perspective in its research design. Three secondary school students are selected to undertake several lessons that are aligned with the van Hiele model and then interviewed to gather information. Academic report cards, field notes, and interview transcripts are used to obtain the necessary data. Various methods of cross analysis and triangulation of data are used to verify the findings. The results indicate that the students view this model as a scaffolding approach to solve complex problems, a way to promote interaction and communication in the classroom, and a learning approach to develop reflective thinking skills. From the triangulation of various data, the factors determined are the linguistic skills, the adherence to the van Hiele levels, and the sequential progression of the phases of learning. In conclusion, the van Hiele model of geometric thought had a positive impact on the students, albeit a small sample size. This paper hopes to serve as a minor contribution to the growing body of work on different approaches in the field of mathematical education, making learning mathematics enjoyable.
