Abstract
|
Organizational Commitment of an employee has been known to yield a positive effect on
absenteeism, punctuality, job performance and job satisfaction. In this study, the
relationship between Emotional Intelligence of leaders’ and its effects on the
Organizational Commitment of their subordinates was studied. This was done to
examine if the decline in Organizational Commitment in subordinates could be turned
around and enhanced by their leaders. From previous studies conducted in this area,
there was evidence that the Organizational Commitment of employees were on the
decline due to the business strategies that businesses were taking in order to survive,
mainly by downsizing. Although a positive relationship has been found to exist between
these 2 variables EI and OC, but there is a scarcity of knowledge available on it and even
lesser on the effects of these variables directly and in an Asian Context. To add on to that
body of knowledge, this quantitative, non experimental survey based research was done
on 2 companies, namely a Multi National Company and a Locally Owned company in
Malaysia. The survey instruments used were the WLEIS and OCS. The questionnaire
consisting of 39 questions were distributed to 150 employees of each of the 2 companies.
A total of 126 and 123 questionnaires were returned from the MNC and the LOC
respectively, which attributed to a 84% and 82% return rate respectively. Data from the
questionnaires were analysed using Descriptive, Regression and Correlation Analyses.
The Cronbach Alpha Realibility Test was also conducted on the Dimensions of EI> The
results were that the data collected was found to be reliable. The reading had to be 0.6
and above and the reading on all the 4 Dimensions were found to above as shown in
Table 7 and 8. The results obtained from the data collected off the survey showed that a
positively significant relationship existed between the individual dimensions of EI and
the total OC; with R² values of 0.446 and 0.430 for the MNC and the LOC respectively.
The results confirm that the OC of subordinates is affected by the EI of their leaders’.
More studies would have to be carried out on this relationship in order to better
understand its effects; the studies should encompass various organizational settings and
on a longer period of time and with on a larger population in this region in order to get
more accurate results that can be used by decision makers in the selection and recruitment
process.
