Recycling steelmaking slag for green use - problem and prospects / Chang Chiew Boon

Abstract
|
Steelmaking slag is an industry by-product produced during the conversion of iron into steel in a basic oxygen furnace, or melting of scrap to make molten steel in an electric arc furnace. It was once considered as a scheduled wastes in Malaysia but it has been delisted as scheduled wastes by the Environment Department in 2005. In actual fact, this by-product is valuable and extremely versatile construction material. Because of the rich natural availability and poor environmental awareness in the past, the steelmaking slag was discarded as a waste and accumulated in stockpile and/or landfills. In relatively recent years, natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce and the mining operation is becoming more difficult. Through the physical separation process in a slag processing plant, steelmaking slag is currently used for many applications and its utilization helps to prevent the exhaustion of natural mineral resources, minimizes greenhouse gas emission, and enhances the usage of waste material.
