Abstract
|
This research studied the relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment among academicians in private colleges in Penang, Malaysia. A total of fifteen hypotheses were developed and tested for this study. A total of 90 questionnaires were distributed to four major private colleges in Penang over a period of three weeks from mid-August to early September 2015. The subsequent data gathered were analysed using statistical techniques such as reliability analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The findings showed that, as a whole, servant leadership was not a predictor of organizational commitment.
Certain dimensions of servant leadership, such as altruistic calling had significant relationship with the components of organizational commitment, but were insufficient when taken collectively to influence organizational commitment. Theoretically, this study implies that the servant leadership style may not be suitable to be applied to affect organizational commitment levels in academicians however, this does not conclusively invalidate servant leadership as an effective leadership style, as some aspects of it does have an influence on organizational commitment. The findings may provide guidance as to which dimensions of servant leadership to adopt for leadership guidance, as well as to contribute to existing literature on organizational commitment, with the main aim of human resource retention.
