Abstract
|
This research paper looks at attitudes of the Primary English language teachers towards English language learning in a Malaysian government school and a British international school based in Malaysia. The main purpose of this paper is to compare the perceptions, teaching methods and attitudes of these teachers who come from different backgrounds. Findings revealed that most teachers emphasize their command of English when teaching English in classroom. Obtaining good command of English pronunciation and English grammar is essential as a professional English teacher. Teacher respondents displayed different attitudes in selecting English textbooks, as ideal teaching materials are not easy to find and cater for all teachers’ actual needs in their different classroom contexts. One of the reasons might be the native English textbooks do not have any Chinese or Malay translation, which local teachers felt the difficulty in using. In other situation, teacher respondents display lack of confidence towards local bilingual English teachers in teaching English.
