Abstract
|
Writing is a challenging activity especially for learners of a second /foreign language but they still have to master it in order to do well in academic courses especially at the tertiary level of education. This research aims to identify the factors that cause writing anxiety and the effects of the three dimensions of writing anxiety on the writing performance of postgraduate students. The purpose of devising questionnaire was to investigate the Writing Anxiety among Malaysian university students. The questionnaire consisted of eighteen questions on the three dimensions of writing anxiety. The results of the data collected through twenty nine respondents. It was concluded that the fear of teacher’s negative comments, linguistic difficulties, pressure of time and striving for perfect work, insufficient writing practice and problems with topic are some of the underlining causes of the students’ anxiety. There are a number of other factors such as a lack of interest in the language, students’ negative perception of the importance of learning this target language and the lack of confidence to produce good written work. This paper also discusses some of the important issues that affect students learning and the remedial steps to take in order to address these issues. Educators should reflect on the current curriculum and the English teaching method and style of those concerned. It reflects on the current education system in Malaysia regarding the position of English language literacy in the school and university systems.
