Title Job satisfaction among staff : a faculty in a research university/ Shariza bt Abdul Razak
Abstract Job satisfaction is a crucial factor in determining the productivity and maintaining the dynamic ambiance in every workplace. It is also affects the physical and mental well being or health of employees. Thus, it was important to investigate the level of job satisfaction among employers to increase or maintain work productivity. This cross-sectional study was carried out for duration of three months (September – November 2010) to determine job satisfaction among academic staff in the School of Health Sciences, USM. Data was collected from 68 academic staff using a survey questionnaire containing demographic data and four aspects of job satisfaction (i.e job characteristics, salary and welfare, professional growth and interpersonal skills) with a 5-point Likert scale whereby score 1 for not satisfied at all to score 5 as extremely satisfied. The data was then analysed using SPSS version 18 including independent t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The significant level was set at alpha = 0.05. The study has revealed the level of job satisfaction was highest among the senior academic staff. Independent t-test showed there was a significant difference in job satisfaction between senior (mean=113.83, SD =33.25) and junior academic staff (mean= 95.45, SD= 30.11; t(66)= 2.025, p= 0.045). However, there were no significant relationships found between job satisfaction and duration of being an academic staff in the faculty (r = -.150, n = 68, p = 0.223). In conclusion, this study revealed that level of satisfaction vary among academic staff. Additionally, this study also demonstrated that job satisfaction was significantly difference between senior and junior staff although duration being as an academic staff was not correlated with job satisfaction. It is recommended that several measures should be done to improve overall working environment or atmosphere in the faculty which later will be translated into high job satisfaction and productivity of the university as a whole.
