Abstract
|
This paper intends to research the factors that are affecting human capital development in a high technology organization such as Company-X in Kuching, Sarawak. This issue is unique to Company-X as the organization has been perceived and considered as a training ground for engineers to job hopping to other institutions within and out of country due to the possession and the pinnacle status in technology and process, As the engineers gain these statuses, it is easy to lose its human capital investment to other organizations (Metle, 2001). Furthermore, this paper intends to provide a further study on the opportunities and how to further improve human capital development in Company-X especially for its engineer’s category which includes levels from engineer to Member of the Technical Staff which is also the highest position for an engineer in Company-X.
As employee effectively retained over the longer period of time, this will further enhance the human capital development for the organization as factors such as training, technology, process improvement and skill transfer will effectively retained within the organization and it will further provide value added to the human capital development asset. With this, long term of employee retention will leads to human capital development as it is the most critical and the primary determinant of organizational success (Hand, 2003; Nooteboom, 2002). Under the context of long term employee retention, the ‘duration of time’ does not allow the employee to stay in comfortable zone as semiconductor industry is cyclic and volatile in nature. This industry constantly requires changes and flexibility from within the organization to meet with the ever changing ‘want’ of their end customers.
The factors that affected employee retention will be researched by probing into intangible variables such as employee satisfaction, commitment, engagement and motivation. These variables have been explored before in other research paper but nevertheless, the same implications applied on Company-X unique challenges. These variables are needed to optimize performance and organizational excellence since employees are the intangible assets (Leslie, 2003) and engine mechanism for every organization. As employee retained towards longer period of time, this may further enhance human capital development due to experiences gained.
