Factors determining students' choice of private higher learning institutions / Looi Soo Sheng

Abstract
|
Private higher learning institutions are profit-oriented organisations. They depend on
enrolments of students to keep their operations going. The paper focuses on the
factors that would influence a student’s choice of enrolling in a private higher
learning institution. In addition, the paper looks into the intentions of a student to
enrol in a foreign university branch campus in the future. The research was done
based on a conceptual model adapted from the Student Satisfaction and Retention
Model (SSRM) (Keaveney and Young 1997). A survey was conducted among
students from 4 well-known institutions located within the Klang Valley.
Questionnaires were distributed to collect the data. It was a quantitative analysis
method as SPSS analysis was used to analyse the data collected. The results
indicated that class facilities, cost of education and reputation of institution are the
top three factors that influence the student’s choice of enrolling in a private higher
learning institution. The results also show that a slight majority of the students would
not like to enrol in the present institution in the future. This may affect the retention
rate of students in the present institutions. An overwhelming number of students
indicated that they would enrol in a foreign university branch campus if the fees are
more affordable. They perceived that there is better job recognition and potential
employers prefer graduates from foreign university branch campuses. The study
includes some strategic recommendations for better management of student
recruitment. The research did not specifically investigate the link between the
factors, student satisfaction and student retention rate. However, one of the
implications of this study is that educational institutions that understand consumer oriented
principles may have a better chance of enrolling and retaining more satisfied
students.
