Title An investigative study of factors affecting employee retention in a small manufacturing firm in Penang / Lee Kim Teong
Abstract The retention of human resources is important to the development and the accomplishment of the organization's goal and objectives. The purpose of this study is to explore the main factors affecting employee retention in a small manufacturing firm in Penang. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed to employees in the manufacturing firm. The survey questions were designed to analyze the four retention factors i.e. benefits, company culture, organizational strategies and demographics factors. The result of the survey has shown that benefits such as competitive salary and compensation were rated as the most important factor to employees in this manufacturing firm followed by bonuses and health care. The three main company cultures rated the most important to employees include effective communication between superiors/supervisors and employees, rewarding and recognizing employees who achieve individual goals/objectives and the fair and respectful treatment of employees. The three main organizational strategies rated as the most important to employees are performance review, rewards and recognition, and training opportunities. Meanwhile, working from home, a flexible work schedule, and sports and recreations were rated as the least important factors. It is also concluded that demographic factors do not show any significant effects on employee retention in this manufacturing firm. The main reason could be due to insufficient data to make a conclusion based on demographic factor. Finally, it is endeavored that the conclusions drawn from all the findings as well as a better understanding of the related factors would help the company to draw better strategies in their effort to ameliorate employee retention.
