Title Factors influencing eateries preference among locals and tourists in Ipoh. / Tan Tze Khuan.
Abstract Ipoh, although it is only a small city in Perak, Malaysia is a heaven to many people. It was voted as one of the top 10 best cities to visit by Lonely Planet in 2016. Many visitors and tourists visit Ipoh frequently as it has a variety of good food to offer. Ipoh situated between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, is about 2 hours drive from either cities. Many eateries including restaurants, cafes, hawkers, fine dining restaurant and confectionaries pop up like mushrooms all over the city. However, after only a few months, many are seen to be closing down. It raises many concerns to the researcher, being a food lover. Furthermore, a lot of resources are being wasted this way, including talents, money and time. The researcher wants to identify what are the factors that influence customers’ preference when choosing eateries in Ipoh. Eateries are categorized into traditional eateries that have been around for a long time, and also newly opened eateries. Hence, the research has been based on two main parts, which are factors that influence customers to choose a new eatery for the very first time, and factors that influence customers to returning to that eatery. A third part was eventually added, which is to identify the possible factors that eatery close down. The researcher started off by observing the trend of customers choosing their preferred eateries, and conduct small discussion groups with friends and colleagues of factors they see important to the subject. Then formal interviews are conducted to people from various age, gender and income group. Factors introduced by interviewees are then complied into questionnaire, which were then tested and distributed randomly online. Responses from questionnaires are then analyzed based on age, gender and income group so that a pattern that affects the preference of customers can be identified. The outcome of the research paper aims in assisting operators and vendors of eateries in Ipoh in offering what customers wants in order to sustain the current low economy. Eateries operators and vendors may identify their target customers and also identify what their expectations are toward them. This will save a lot of unnecessary expenses in offering what is useless to their customers. The researcher hopes that this research paper is useful and helpful in seeing more growth on the food industry.
