Title Knowledge and attitude of nurses towards 5S implementation at an intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital / Badrisyah bin Idris
Abstract In order to control escalating healthcare costs, it is important for a hospital to reduce waste as much as possible. One approach that can be employed is to implement a lean tool called 5S. 5S is a an approach of organising workplace using standard set of activities which comprises of Sort, Set, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. 5S can help a hospital to organise the workplace for efficiency, waste reduction and quality improvement. Nurses play important roles in integrating quality processes within a healthcare setting. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the knowledge and attitude of nurses towards 5S implementation at an intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital. Surveying method was used by distributing questionnaire that comprised of data on sociodemography of the nurses, questions on knowledge of 5S implementation, and questions on attitudes towards 5S implementation in relations to job satisfaction, productivity and safety at work. Results of the showed that the nurses produce significant positive responses to knowledge and attitude towards 5S implementation. Significant predictors for positive attitude in job satisfaction with 5S implementation were working experience, Set activity, Sustain activity and continuous improvement practices for 5S implementation. There were two significant predictors for productivity, namely continuous improvement practices for 5S implementation and work discipline in 5S environment. Significant predictors for safety at work included number of 5S training, Set activity, Sustain activity, namely continuous improvement practices for 5S implementation and work discipline in 5S environment. Despite its simplicity and applicability, 5S implementation at a healthcare setting has a number of key drivers and barriers. Knowledge regarding continuous improvement practices and work discipline should be emphasised in 5S training and education of nurses so that positive attitude towards 5S implementation can be gained. Several components of 5S implementation such as Set and Sustain activities are known barriers to this practice. Education and practice efforts need to be ongoing and should focus not only the technical aspects of 5S implementation but the social factors that can influence its practice. Nurses who possess positive knowledge and attitudes of 5S implementation are more likely to integrate 5S activities in their daily work.
