Title A study on the effects of digital music download and the sales of music compact discs in Malaysia / Chow Lak Keong
Abstract This paper is aimed to study the effects of digital music download has on the sales of physical music compact discs in Malaysia. Digital music is one of the most popular platform of listening and storing music these days. With the popularity of this platform of music and the advent of internet and broadband technologies, more users are inclined to go online to obtain music. The rationale of the study is to ascertain how far this form of music downloading has taken its effect on the music industry in Malaysia. The study aims to provide an insight to the factors relating to digital music download, its influential effect on users preferential, the legality issues involved and the demand it has created amongst internet users. There are substantial literatures written on the effects of digital music towards the sales of compact disc. After reviewing these literary write-ups, it was observed that music has evolved from the traditional compact discs to digital music in how it is being distributed and accessed. With the internet technology, music is easily being uploaded and shared amongst users. Digital music can be downloaded via legal (subscriptions and pay per song through legal websites) and illegal (file sharing sites) means. In addition, there are a host of other factors including convenience, accessibility, transportability and cost which are strong leverages to attract users to download digital music. Based on these factors, the researcher proposed a framework that combined the theory of planned behaviour and theory of demand to further analyzed the situation. A survey was conducted amongst Wawasan Open University students with a specific designed questionnaire. Quantitative approach was the main driver of the analysis and the results showed there is a relationship (even though it was not strong) between digital music downloading and its effect on the sale of physical compact discs. The effect being more internet users prefer to digitally download music compared to purchasing compact discs. After compiling these findings, strategic recommendations for improvement in future research for this area (expansion of sample size and broadening geographical locations) and to the music industry (innovation and adapting to the changes of music distribution for maximum effect) were put forward.
