Influence of working condition on job satisfaction / Tan Yean Li

Abstract
|
This study sets out to determine how the factors of working conditions influence job
satisfaction and to examine the effects of demographic factors as an intervening variable
between the factors of the working conditions and job satisfaction. The purpose was to
identify the factors that may positively influence satisfaction and determine how
demographic factors affect the relationship between factors of working conditions and job
satisfaction. The sample for this study comprised respondents purposively drawn from the
circle of friends and acquaintances of the researcher who happen to be staying or working in
the same or nearby vicinity.
Data were collected through questionnaire distributed either by hand or email. A total of 100
sets of questionnaire were distributed by hand while another 35 sets were by email. Out of
these, 88 sets of questionnaire were retrieved while only 20 candidates responded via email.
The results of the study suggest that the six factors of working conditions, namely work itself,
pay, promotion, supervision, environment and co-worker influence job satisfaction at varying
degrees. This is partially inconsistent with the literature review and could perhaps stem from
the method of data collection. The findings showed that out of the six factors of working
conditions, only two factors, work itself and the working environment are able to positively
influence job satisfaction. Another two of the factors of working conditions, promotion and supervision have only weak influence over job satisfaction while the two remaining factors,
pay and co-workers do not seem to be able to influence job satisfaction. As for the role of
gender as a representative of demographic factors, it was found that their job satisfaction of
men was only affected by the supervision factor. In contrast, the job satisfaction of women
was affected by the factors of work itself and the working environment. As for the three other
factors such as promotion, pay and co-workers; it seemed demographic factors did not
mediate any effect on the job satisfaction.
The study also made some recommendations and implications. For future research, it was
recommended that respondents from many different sectors and a larger geographical area
can be included as the samples. In addition future studies should also look at situational
factors together with the factors of working conditions. The implications of this study are that
employees are receptive towards job satisfaction and knowledge of job satisfaction is very
useful for managers and decision makers in any organization.
