Abstract
|
This paper analyse the association between quality of patient care and the dimensions of
hospital performance that could promote the implementation of quality improvement
strategies in hospitals. This study analyses the cross sectional data of seventy-five staffs
working at dedicated Cancer Hospital in Penang. The six dimensions are clinical
effectiveness, patients’ centeredness, production efficiency, safety, staff orientation and
responsive governance. Among the variables identified to be significantly associated with
quality care are policies that focused on the patients; the simplification of the processes of
patient admission and discharge; good perception among the patients, efficiency in
addressing patients’ grievances; availability of adequate diagnostic facilities;
administrative procedures; holistic approach of the hospital; proactive measure by the
hospital’s management to prevent errors in diagnosis, operations and treatment;
involvement of medical and paramedical staffs in quality improvement activities;
satisfaction of the staff with respect to their salary, perks and other financial incentives;
efficiency in the functioning of a grievance redressal system for all hospital staff; medical
charges that are proportion with patient's economic background; impact of hospital’s
activities on environment; and the talks and campaigns organised by the hospital. The
analysis of this study suggested hospitals should focus on all the six dimensions listed in
this study to improve the quality care provided to patients.
