Title A study on intervening impact of cost competitiveness on strategic influence factors and performance: an empirical assessment on globalized Northern Malaysia manufacturers. / John Paul Wang Sing Siew
Abstract This study has carried out a comprehensive investigation on the impact of outsourcing strategic influence factors on company performance among manufacturing companies in Malaysia. The outsourcing strategic influence factors investigated are core competency, supply chain collaboration, operational flexibility and strategic outsourcing propensity. Notwithstanding the fact that the demand for strategic outsourcing has been growing rapidly, majority of the studies have focus their investigation on developed economies. Hence, present literature lacks the inclusion of strategic outsourcing influence in developing economies. As Malaysia is challenged to remain competitive in the face of globalization, this study will prove vital in providing a deeper understanding of the influence of strategic outsourcing in its own environment. This study has also investigated the intervening impact of cost competitiveness on the relationship between outsourcing strategic influence factors and company performance. In addition, the moderating impact of globalization between cost competitiveness and company performance was thoroughly investigated. The findings of these investigations are novel and will add-value to the present literature on strategic outsourcing. In the end, this study aims to establish the managerial predictive model which will define the relationship between outsourcing strategic influence factors and company performance. A total of 150 survey questionnaires were sent out through emails to sampled manufacturing companies based in northern states of Malaysia. The survey consists of two parts namely demographic profiles and assessment on the defined variables. The survey underwent pilot testing to determine the suitability and validity of the established questions. The data collected were analyzed with statistical techniques such as factor analysis, hierarchical regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA). This study has discovered that all four defined strategic influence factors have positive influence on company performance. In addition, cost competitiveness of a company was found to have intervening impact on the relationship between strategic influence factors and company performance. As for globalization, the result shows that it diminishes the positive relationship between cost competitiveness and company performance. In other words, the advantages offered by cost competitiveness to outsourcing companies are insufficient when confronted with globalization. This interesting finding warrants further research as it could potentially develop superior understanding for Malaysian companies to compete internationally. The findings of this study have clearly shown that companies which perform outsourcing have higher performance as compared to companies which do not. In addition, with the established managerial predictive model, this study has provided new empirical insights that cost competitiveness, supply chain collaboration and strategic outsourcing propensity are significant predictors for companies to achieve higher performance.
