Title A study on the awareness among healthcare students on the importance of pervasive computing. / Wong Jia Ing
Abstract Emergent of pervasive computing technologies in healthcare raises some challenges such as confidentiality, security and privacy issues. Quality of healthcare institution will be affected when there is an issue due to these challenges. A study was done to observe the awareness level of healthcare students on the pervasive computing in healthcare due to its implications to healthcare if it is not handling properly. The findings of the study will give healthcare providers ideas about the awareness level of university students and management can allocate budget for new employees’ pervasive computing training to ensure the quality of their organizations will be up to the par. Inductive and quantitative approaches were used in this study and data was collected through questionnaires that distributed to students by few student representatives in one of the universities in Klang Valley. Convenience sampling method was adopted in data collection. 150 healthcare students from less than 18 till above 32 years old been recruited regardless gender, tertiary education level and courses taken. Data was analyzed using standard statistical software IBM SPSS 22 while data analysis involved correlation coefficient and regression. Correlation coefficient determines the association between two variables while regression analysis determines the relationships between variables. The dependent variable was awareness level of the university students in term of security, confidentiality of patients’ data and responsibility. The independent variables were education received on cyber safety, knowledge on professionalism in handling patients’ data and knowledge on threats of pervasive computing. There is no association between education received on cyber safety and awareness level of healthcare students on pervasive computing but we found out that knowledge on the threats of pervasive computing, knowledge in the professionalism of handling patients’ data and education received on cyber safety were greatly influencing the awareness level of healthcare students on pervasive computing in healthcare. There is a weak association between knowledge on the threats of pervasive computing and awareness level of healthcare students on pervasive computing while for knowledge on professionalism in handling patients’ data with awareness level of healthcare students, the association is a moderate association. There is no linear relationship exist between education received on cyber safety as there is no association between these two variables. There is a linear relationship between knowledge on the threats of pervasive computing and knowledge on professionalism in handling patients’ data with awareness levels of healthcare students on pervasive computing as they were statistically significant.
