Title Challenges faced by Ipoh Cargo Terminal as an Inland Port ; solutions to overcome it / Murugan a/l Narayanan
Abstract An inland port was developed as an alternative to a seaport. Inland port provides all facilities and logistics services that available at seaport strategic location. It is an authorized body, which is qualified to fit with fixing, service management and temporary storage for various good including containers under customs route. Normally an inland port is located outside port town where there is no restriction apply to container freight station (CFS) Ipoh Cargo Terminal is a private company was established as first inland port or dry port in Malaysia. The ultimate purpose of this study is to find the reasons what are the challenges faced by Ipoh Cargo Terminal and the possible solutions to overcome these challenges. For this study questionnaire on Ipoh cargo Terminal’s services was distributed to all the forwarding agents in Kinta Valley. This is to find out the strength and weakness of Ipoh Cargo Terminal in term of customers perception. A qualitative interview was conducted with the Chief Executive Officer and Business Development Manager of Ipoh Cargo Terminal, to find out what are the threats and opportunities of Ipoh Cargo Terminal. The findings indicated that, the forwarding agents are satisfied with the service provided. Eventually the services are the strength of Ipoh Cargo Terminal. From the qualitative the challenges that Ipoh Cargo Terminal were found as well as the threats and the opportunities. From the findings, discussion and the implication towards other players in the industry were detailed. The end results of the study reveal that the challenges faced by Ipoh Cargo Terminal are the deregulation of road haulage industry, rates offered by the hauliers to the customers, time to bring container from Ipoh to Port Klang where by road shorter than rail and cost factors which is main focus of the customers. The solution of overcoming was to have own haulage service, shorter railing time and more utilization of warehouse which will assist Ipoh Cargo Terminal to overcome the challenges. The findings provide evidence for the future researcher to extend the study to other business in the transportation industry.
