Public hospitals are the main providers of healthcare in Malaysia. Worldwide providers are looking towards to lean philosophy as a possible solution to provide high quality care and reduce cost by removing waste. Lean originated from automobile manufacturing and Toyota Production System. Lean was first introduced to healthcare in Malaysia by Performance Management & Delivery Unit in 2011 as with a few pilot hospitals with variable success.
