Title Effectiveness of the supply chain collaboration among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Penang: an empirical study / Lim Kok Cheong.
Abstract Over the past decade, the Government of Malaysia has become acutely aware of the significant contribution of small medium enterprises (SMEs) to the national economy. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Penang have been known as an engine for the local economy as it generates employment to the Penangites; and helps boost the economic growth. Research studies on collaboration among SMEs' operational effectiveness in Penang become crucial to understand the level of collaboration among the SME and gauge if it brings any operational effectiveness to SMEs organization in today's competitive market. This research study was carried out on SMEs in Penang. A theoretical framework designed with 6 independent variables (collaboration factors) and 1 dependent variable (Operational effectiveness) was used in this research study. A simple random sampling study was conducted among the SMEs in Penang through email and online questionnaires. The results show that collaboration among SMEs brings an overall positive impact on the operational effectiveness. There are five collaboration factors namely Operation Information Sharing, Operation Planning, Trust, Goal Congruence and Personal Interaction which are positively and statistically significant with the operational effectiveness. However, there is one variable namely Information System which does not increase operational effectiveness in SME organisations. The demographic profiles of the respondents have no significant correlation with the operational effectiveness. A few strategic recommendations were put forward towards the end of the research paper.
