Title Factors that influence job hopping in Penang : a study based on electronic & engineering (E&E) sector / Leong Pei Sun
Abstract The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between rewards & compensation, the company, career development, job satisfaction, the management/peer influence and job hopping behaviour in Penang Bayan Lepas area among electronic and engineering (E&E) sector. The independent variable is rewards & compensation, the company, career development, job satisfaction and the management/peer influence while the dependent variable is job hopping behaviour. The objective is to get valid and reliable results that help the employer/human resource agency to understand employees’ true concern of job hop.Via non-probability random sampling method, total of 60 respondents from Bayan Lepas area among electronic and engineering (E&E) sector were participated in this study. The collected data were then analysed statistically using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) System. And reliability analysis, descriptive analysis, correlational analysis, regression and multiple regression analysis were used as the bases of the analyses. Results indicated that rewards & compensation and career development was significantly positive related to job hopping behaviour. It also revealed that the company, job satisfaction and the management/peer influence has insignificantly related to job hopping behaviour under multiple regression analysis. Theoretically, this research has contributed to the literature on those suggested independent variables towards job hopping behaviour. Practically, study revealed only rewards & compensation and career development has significantly positive relationship with job hopping behaviour, and the manager or human resource agency can also use such perspective in avoiding employee from job hop. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were also stated in this study. Although the study only limited to Penang’s Bayan Lepas E&E sector due to time constraint for now, but in future, researchers should consider do this research in more states. And as conclusion, this research revealed the importance of the addressing the relevant factors in affecting job hopping in Penang.
