Title Price versus quality : which will prevail in the agriculture chemicals industry? / Alan Yeow Chi Leng
Abstract In the market, consumers are always faced with the dilemma of price and quality, which will be the most important determinant factor in their purchasing decision. The same can be said about the agriculture industry especially for the purchase of agriculture inputs such as agrochemicals. Therefore, a study was conducted to know which of the two factors is the most dominant in determining the purchasing decision of the consumers namely the farmers. The researcher chose the paddy farmers of Malaysia from three different states ( Kedah, Penang and Perak ) to be our study population to know their behavior towards these factors. A convenient survey method with the use of questionnaire was implemented and the researcher managed to come out with five ( 5 ) different questions to study the consumer’s behavior. The questionnaire was divided into mainly three ( 3 ) parts to know exactly how the consumer rated in terms of the product, market and also the company. Likert scale method was applied as the scoring to know how would the consumers rate. In the survey, we found out that the factor which a majority customers cherished the most is price; and quality of the product is secondary regardless of ethnicity( whether Malays, Chinese, Indians or others ). However, there are still some consumers especially from the ethnic Malays, who value quality more than price but this type of consumer is in the minority. The availability of marketing mix such as gifts and discounts also played an important part in the consumer’s behavior. The consumers are more likely to purchase the product with the availability of gifts and discounts rather than just depending upon quality or price alone. As a conclusion, we can say that between price and quality, price seems to prevail especially in the agrochemicals industry mainly because of the fact that consumers or farmers treated the agrochemicals as inputs, thus minimizing their cost will definitely increase their profit. This behavior is universally true regardless of which ethnicity the farmer belongs to.
