Determining the effectiveness of intrinsic and extrinsic factors towards increasing motivation / Lee Meng Poh
|
Abstract
|
This research paper is a study of how effective is intrinsic and extrinsic motivators in
increasing or even decreasing the level of motivation in the working class. Many
studies have been carried out in this field as to how to get employees to achieve
higher productivity. Managers must know what / how to motivate their subordinates
in order to achieve the organization objectives. Extrinsic motivators which includes
money, bonus and tangible rewards are the most popular motivators but the
importance of intrinsic motivators like recognition, increase knowledge and etc
cannot be ignore. The effect of recognition may not be as immediate as monetary
reward but may not be as lasting effect. A set of good motivators not only can
increase the level of productivity but also to ‘keep’ good employees in the
organisation. This study has compared the significance of the two motivator namely
extrinsic and intrinsic motivators. The research will answer whether there is any
significance difference in the level of motivation among the two. The results using
hypothesis test will examine the above question. This research will also look into
comparing the ranking of motivation factors carried out here to another study which
was carried out in Romania in 1999.
