Title A case study on the company shares value and company performance of publicly traded companies listed on Bursa Malaysia / Tang Boon Koon.
Abstract Due to the significant role of the stock market in the economy, many studies attempt to investigate the factors that influence the behavior or the movement of the stock market index, but the approach is mostly based on empirical study on one or two particular variables which may not be enough to represent the movement of the share price. The aim of the study is to find out why the company is performing, but the share price is not and what is it about how stocks are valued that we may have overlooked. The study is not seeking to develop a theory through sampling logic approach because the problem being addressed is related to the characteristics of the movements of the share price where there is little control over the events. A stratified sampling was performed on the secondary data collected from the Bursa Malaysia website and other related information from the public domain on a total of 922 publicly listed companies to determine the company profitability and its share price performance. A multiple case study was further performed using a total of 17 published case studies as presented in the literature review to determine the causal relations and case study that is situated along the share price movement within the population of interest. The data and analysis show that based on the 52-week low analogy, total market, which include Main and ACE market recorded a total of 197 companies which represent 28.59% of the companies is performing within profitability but the share price is not. A total of 24 independent variables in the stock market index have been identified through the published case studies and the majorities of the independent variables shown a positive relationship towards the impact on the share price movement. Final results show that company performing above par may not necessarily perform well on their share price which it is believed that share prices are determined by the market forces of demand and supply.
