Title The effectiveness of grammar games in the delivery of English Language lessons in a private school for Primary 6 students in Malaysia. / Jasvinder Kaur A/P Gurchuran Singh
Abstract The overall use of the English language in terms of grammar prowess in both the understanding and communicational components are declining among the younger group of learners. In many stereotypical situations, students are able to only regurgitate what is taught without having the fundamental understanding of how the language would work independently without a structured worksheet of a textbook. Hence, this study was conducted to investigate as to how grammar-based lessons would enhance the teaching and learning environment and consolidate the students’ knowledge pertaining to a specific grammar item taught. In hindsight, this research could also reveal on the effectiveness of utilizing grammar-based games in an English lesson, strengths as well as details that would in usual circumstances go undetected when it pertains to conducting a game based lesson, and how the teacher would benefit from carrying out the activity. The instruments used for main data collection in this study were questionnaires and informal interviews. The overall results of this study highlights that grammar-based lessons are an effective tool for the teaching and learning of Primary 6 students. It highlighted the overall motivation of the students when it came to learning through the method of using a game. The game-based lesson to be successful, Albert Bandura’s four learning methods were to be improvised into the game. By incorporating these four sub-factors into the game, the overall results obtained showed that the students did learn meaningful chunks of knowledge related to the grammar item and that they were able to simultaneously use it as part of their communication with their friends in the classroom. In conclusion, they were able to receive meaningful information and be able to use it confidently, therefore encouraging the use of the English language not as a subject, but rather a language to be learnt.
