Title Factors that encourage SME in Penang to adopt production automation in the context of Industry 4.0. / Mah Hang Lee.
Abstract This study examines the factors that encourage the adoption of automation in Industry 4.0 context for SMEs in Penang state. Resources based view (RBV) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) are adopted as supporting theories for this study. These two theories form the basis of the selection of six variables ( potential business opportunity, skilled human resources, information technology, perceived usefulness, shareholder’s commitment, pressure from competitor ) and two moderators variables ( government policy and incentives ) in the research framework. Pilot test was conducted to validate the 1st version questionnaire. The result of the pilot test led to changes in the questions that measure the moderating variables. 76 responses were collected based on convenient sampling plan conducted among the SMEs located in Penang. The research framework were tested with regression analysis using SPSS v23. Hypothesis tested positive in relation to intention to adopt automation in Industry 4.0 concept are incentive, information technology architecture integration, shareholder’s commitment and pressure from competitors. Incentive and government policy were found to completely moderate the relationship between peer pressure and intention to adopt automation ala Industry 4.0. Government policy, perceived business opportunity and skilled human capital do not show significant relationship to intention to adoption while perceived usefulness has negative relationship toward intention to adoption. SMEs interviewed showed luke warm responses to automation in the context of Industry 4.0. Length in operation for the SME is the demographic data that differentiate SME’s intention toward adoption automation under Industry 4.0 context. There are marketing and strategic management concerns in order to achieve sustainable business competitive advantages in the new era of Industry 4.0. This competition is inevitable as Malaysia is an open economy. Thus, this report forms a pinnacle preview for the SMEs to plan their limited resources and to prioritize their actions into adopting Industry 4.0 way of doing business. A rightful starting point will certainly increase the chance for our SME to win their battles and succeed in their business endeavours in the current turbulence and challenging business environment. This make this study relevant and meaningful piece of work.
