Title Business knowledge of doctors and their attitude towards commercialization of healthcare in Malaysia / N. Pasupathi a/l Nadarajan
Abstract Doctors have to adapt to the increasing level of commercialization of healthcare sector but traditionally doctors are neither seen as managers nor businessmen. Developments in recent times have included various profit based organizations and industries in the healthcare system and there are increasing needs for the doctors to have a dedicated group that are knowledgeable not only in management but also in the business practices. The Malaysian healthcare system consists of the public and private organizations that need strong doctors’ representation at the management levels. A quantitative descriptive study was carried out with 37 doctors conveniently selected from private clinics, private hospitals and government hospitals to analyze their basic business knowledge and their attitude towards commercialization of healthcare. It was found that generally doctors’ business and administrative knowledge is poor and they agree that a separate specialty field of management doctors is required to oversee the broader picture of the healthcare system and provide directions to the healthcare industry. In addition, the doctors also believe that basic education on healthcare management system is necessary in the undergraduate training so that with proper understanding of the various mechanisms, they can function better in serving the patients knowing the issues, limitations and advantages of the system. However, there should be clear and distinctive boundaries drawn between clinical services and commercialization as undue influence in the former can spell trouble for the people in the long run. As such, separation of clinical duties and management duties among doctors may positively contribute to the upholding of the noble values of medicine. In conclusion, doctors trained in management with good understanding of the various business practices can potentially improve the healthcare system
