Title Factors influencing the retention of professional nurses in a private hospital / Ann Loh
Abstract Nurses make up the largest portion of health care workers in a hospital setting. There is an increasing demand in Penang due to a shortage of skilled staff and the expansion of the health tourism industry. This combined with the migration of nurses to overseas destinations has led for a need to improve retention and attract new staff. In this study, 72 registered nurses completed questionnaires. This provided insight into the factors influencing their retention. Organisational and managerial factors influenced the retention potential of these particular nurses. The theoretical framework examined Maslow’ Hierarchy of Needs Theory, Lewin’s Force Field analysis, Vogt’s Corktop (bottleneck) Theory and Herzberg’s Theory of motivation. In this study the needs to be fulfilled centered on safety and security and self esteem needs.
