Title A study on factors impacting the migration of cheque payments to electronic payments / Suakwinder Singh Tara Singh
Abstract Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has taken the initiative to reduce the usage of cheques and promote greater use of electronic payment. This study is to identify and analyze the factors impacting the migration of cheque payments towards electronic payments via internet banking. The objective of this study is to investigate the variables such as attitude, perceived security and trust, experience and knowledge and perceived ease of use that has been identified affecting the adoption of electronic payment. A research framework was constructed that links the different factors impacting the adoption of electronic payment. The research methodology is a cross-sectional study. A total of 80 questionnaires were randomly distributed to banks customers with the help of banks staff. The response rate was 95%. The data collected were analyzed with the help of SPSS software and the statistical techniques applied were factorial analysis, descriptive analysis, ANOVA, Cronbach‟s Alpha reliability tests, Pearson Correlation Measure and regression analysis to measure the reliability and relationship of the variables. The findings revealed that all the factors investigated (attitude, perceived security and trust, experience and knowledge and perceived ease of use) have significant and positive influence on the adoption of electronic payment. The study also revealed that cheques are still widely used because recipient prefers cheque, everyone accepts cheque, it is easy to use and it can be used as post-dated. Finally, this paper implicated the importance of the study towards the stakeholders (Government, BNM and Banks) who are involved in making policies, planning, promoting and making enhancements in relation to electronic payment. A number of approaches are suggested; among them are emphasizing the need for banks to enhance the trust and confidence among customers while ensuring electronic payment is safe and secured, improving the perception customer have on electronic payment, taking steps to increase customers experience and knowledge via roadshows and make available avenues to equip people with internet experience and knowledge. Besides that, the BNM could come up with some drastic and punitive measures to get customers to migrate from cheque payments to electronic payments.
