Title Organizational commitment and turnover intention in a sewerage company in Malaysia / Daljit Kaur Chand Singh
Abstract One of a greatest challenge that is faced by human resources by any organization today is to retain their employees. Losing an employee does not only involve direct financial cost ofreplacement but also other repercussions which includes experience, skills, knowledge and many more. The objective of this study is to provide a valuable insight on the relationship of a sewerage company in Malaysia’s employees’ commitment with the turnover intention. Some of the issues that will be studied is the importance to understand an employee and to address the needs in order to have a full commitment. This has a significant effect on an employee’s behavior and is highly correlated with the turnover intention. This study will specifically examine the impact of affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment on an employee’s turnover intention. The turnover intentions were also divided into three dimensions which are compensation and benefits, career developmentand motivation. The theoretical framework of this study would portray a significant relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention. It will highlight some key issues of organizational commitment which is related to turnover intentions. The design that is selected for this study is a survey research design. Quantitative design is appropriate as it requires numerical measurements. Two variables which is the independent variable and the dependent variable was measured. A total of 53 samples which were the employees of asewerage company in Malaysia. The employees who took part in this survey were selected on cross sectional basis, from various department, education level and different job levels. Structured questions was used to examine the level of commitment and the turnover intention. Sampling method that was used in this study was based on convenience sampling which is a type of non-probability sampling. This relied on data collection via survey forms which were distributed to the respondents. SPSS program was used to key in the data obtained from the samples. The results of this research were then analyzed and interpreted. The purpose of this study is to allow the sewerage company to use this information to reduce the employees turnover intentions and look into prospect which would likely to have the employees committed and reduce the turnover rates. Besides, it is will enhance the relationship between employees and employers as there were a strong negative relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention.
