Title Customers' acceptance on Internet banking services : the Malaysian perspective / Lim Chia Yon
Abstract Many studies have been conducted to determine the factors influencing the acceptance of technology. In this study, TAM model has been extended to the context of Internet banking to better explain the acceptance of Internet banking services. The objective of this study is to identify the factors affecting acceptance of Internet banking services in Malaysia. Computer self-efficacy, privacy and security, preferences for personal contact, trust and two constructs from TAM model (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use) have been identified as the independent variables of this study. It is the goals of this study to generalize the results to the target population which will ultimately enabling the results to be used in assisting banks to implement the Internet banking system effectively and efficiently. This study involved a sampling size of 200 individual customers of commercial banks in Penang. Questionnaires were distributed to targeted respondents of commercial banks’ customers in Penang. The responses of the survey were analyzed using SPSS to test the hypotheses of this study. Interestingly, respondents of this study have viewed perceived ease of use and perceived useful as the same features affecting their acceptance of Internet banking services. Thus, these two variables were then being grouped into one single variable as perceived usability. This study found computer self-efficacy and perceived usability are important factors in influencing customers’ acceptance of Internet banking services. However, privacy and security, preferences for personal contact and trust were found to be insignificant to the acceptance of Internet banking services. The findings indicated 59.1% of the total variation in the customer acceptance was explained by the five independent variables identified in this study. The implications and contributions of these findings to practitioner and theory development were included.
