Abstract
|
Infertility is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse (World Health Organization 2016). Fertility issues are normally perceived as the female's problem; however, it takes two to make a baby. Therefore the problems attributed by the male are just about equal to females in causing fertility difficulties. Male factors now account for 30 percent of fertility problems - the same as female factors. The remaining 40 percent is either a combination of both, or something which cannot be identified (Leonard 2013).In today’s world of globalization, there is a marked improvement in communication, education and health awareness. People also perceive a much higher importance on health than ever before. Globalization has also contributed to the decline of fertility levels worldwide (Caldwell 2006). In Malaysia, there is a decline in children born/woman from 3.01 in 2007 to 2.55 in 2015 (CIA - World Fact Book n.d.) while according to The World Bank (figure 2) the birth rate has declined below 2.00 children born/woman. Although not all is attributed to infertility but the trend is indeed rising and this increases the demand in infertility treatment.
