Researches on employee’s satisfaction are required especially in the higher education
sector (Chen, S., Yang, C. and Shiau, J. and Wang, H., 2006). This is because
institutions of higher learning have the responsibilities in producing graduates
enabling countries’ to achieve sustainability and continuous growth.
The objective of this study is to determine factors influencing employees’ job
satisfaction in a private higher educational institution in Penang. This research utilized
quantitative non probability convenience sampling to examine job satisfaction. The
sample size of this study is 61. The respondents are employees from all departments
in the main campus of the institution. A questionnaire consists of biographical
questions and the Job Description Index (JDI) was distributed to all targeted
respondents. The JDI consists of five dimensions of job satisfaction namely pay,
supervision, co-workers, work itself and promotion opportunities.
This study found employees were most satisfied with the supervision they received
followed by the nature of the job itself and their relationship with co-workers. There
is no significant relationship between the biographical variables and job satisfaction in
this higher educational institution.
