The consumers perception, readiness and acceptance of Goods and Service Tax (GST) implementation in Ipoh : middle and lower income earners perspective / Kuan Kheng Seng
Abstract
Goods and Services tax (GST) is finally implemented on 1 April, 2015 in Malaysia after several deferments. It is a single consumption based tax system. GST is new to Malaysia, but it is not a new tax system. Many developed countries such as Singapore, United State, Australia had been implementing the GST and it is widely recognized globally. Government is facing strong resistance from the public on the decision of implementing GST. To the public, especially the middle and lower incomes earners, they were afraid of the price hike after the GST implementation. As matter of fact, the GST is implemented; the price increase and short term inflation are unavoidable. Therefore, it is more important for the consumers to revisit on investment strategies, budgeting, and as well as individual spending behavior to shape a new healthy life style for the GST era. In other hand, Government is playing an important role in minimizing the impact of GST and ensures it being implemented successfully with good control and execution, close monitoring and enforcement. This research is presented in simple sentences with diagrammatical illustrations and as well as statistical analysis. Hopefully consumers will be enlightened and have more understanding on various aspects of GST.
