Why the recycling rate is low in Malaysia / Ong Eng Gin
|
Abstract
|
This research is to study the factors that cause the lack of recycling in Malaysia. Factors
identified and used as independent variables will be perceived inaccessibility to
recycling facilities, perceived lack of incentives as motivation to recycle, perceived lack
of education and awareness, and perceived lack of enforcement by the government. All
this factors will be examined to find its effect on the cause for the lack of recycling.
200 questionnaires were distributed to random people in two research sites which
isTanjungBunga as well as Gelugor. At the end of the survey, a total of 113
questionnaires were returned which resulted in a 57% response rate. The hypothesis
were then developed from a research framework after careful analysis made from other
studies made by other researchers. SPSS was used to analyze the data collected.
The result showed that perceived inaccessibility to recycling facilities and perceived lack
of incentives as motivation to recycle have a positive influence to the cause for the lack
of recycling among Malaysians. The results were significant. However, there was no
significant results for perceived lack of education and awareness and perceived lack of
enforcement by the government that has a positive influence to the cause of recycling.
In conclusion, in order to increase the rate of recycling in Malaysia, the business
community and the government should focus their attention to improve accessibility to
recycling facilities as well as finding new ways to motivate recycling by way of giving
incentives to Malaysians for their recycled goods. Future study and limitation was
recommended in this research.
