Title Bilingualism in early childhood : the effects to native Chinese speaking children on learning English as a second language / Wong Yee Wan
Abstract Due to the differences of Chinese language that would affect its native speakers on their second language learning (English), this study aims to seek answer regarding the effect of phonological difference in Chinese Language towards a child’s second language (English Language) learning, and the effect of syntactic difference in Chinese Language towards a child’s second language (English Language) learning. Based on the findings of this study, several conclusions could be drawn. The results of the findings show noticeable effects of a child’s native language on the second language learning. As a result, though it has been said that the younger/ earlier a child learns a second language, the better that it is most likely to achieve native-like competence. However, for sequential bilinguals who learn a new language/ second language at the age of three or later, the effects of a child’s native language towards his/ her second language learning shall not be overlooked. Due to the exposure and prior knowledge of the child’s native language, it may cause effects on the child’s second language learning process, for instance, the difference of the phonological systems and syntactic systems between two languages. It is supported by Meisel’s statement (2008), claiming that the prior knowledge of learners’ native language, such as the syntactic systems, leads great effects towards their second language learning. Also, the difference of phonological systems affect in second language learning too. The absence of some sounds and phonological rules may cause some difficulties for second learners to pronounce certain sounds. For example, the difference of phonological systems between English language and Chinese language cause an English as the second language learner prone to make mistakes in pronouncing certain sounds, such as the consonant clusters and words ending with consonant sounds in English language, it is claimed that consonant clusters that is said as the high frequency mistake-prone in pronunciation for native Chinese speakers (Zhang and Yin, 2009).
