Abstract The trend of online trading among retail investors have been increasing significantly in Singapore. In 2012, some 51,000 Central Depository Account were created, according to data from the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX) the accounts were opened for the account holder to venture into the stock market. In 2013, over 68,000 new Central Depository Accounts were opened and it is the largest number of new retail investors in the prosperous Southeast Asia nation in the past five years. However not many research have been conducted to know the factors for retail investors in Singapore acquiring online stock trading. Since the introduction of online stock trading started in Singapore, little work has been done to study as to what has encouraged retail investors into online stock trading. This study is developed to discover the purpose and factors that encourages retail investors adhering into online stock trading in achieving their objectives. The study is useful since it will suggest guidelines for the researcher and future retail investors understanding the method of performing online stock trading and impart the knowledge gained from this study. The study also will help the researcher to identify the advantages and disadvantages of online stock trading where it will provide the researcher and future retail investors a platform whether to get into online stock trading as one of their option for investments. A questionnaire was created which took the form of 17 close and open ended questions in the form of a statement to determine acceptance of online stocks trading. The questions designed through with a range of different selections mainly catering for demographic factors and other contributing factors. The data analysis undertaken used a quantitative method and an online survey questionnaire posted to gather research data from the retail investors using online stocks trading in Singapore. There were 41 data elements collected from the online survey. The data were then further analyzed using SPSS and hypotheses were tested. The study provides evidence that generally Singapore’s demographic profile with better income, education, computer and internet literacy has influenced more people into online stocks trading in Singapore Exchange (SGX). The robust technology infrastructure of Singapore and initiatives by Singapore Exchange (SGX) and government agencies such as Monetary Authority of Singapore, Securities Commission provided retail investors the confidence to diversify their financial investments through online stocks trading.
