Abstract
|
This paper discusses the challenges faced by administrators in higher education institutions in managing international students. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), the government intention is to attract more international students into the country by year 2020. As the number of international students increases, so does the issues and challenges faced by higher education institution administrators. This study focuses on the how these administrators are using their competence and skills to manage the challenges faced while managing international students. The challenges faced by administrators are non-compliance to internal policies of the institution such as high absenteeism, poor academic performance, and working with student visa. The external non-compliance that pose a challenge to administrators, involves Private Higher Education Institution (PHEI, Act 555) regulations on managing international students and their records. The Ministry of Home Affair’s (MOHA) international student licensing requirements involves complying with Immigration Malaysia regulations which state that international student’s attendance and academic performance are the main criteria to have a valid visa which allows them to stay in the country for study (EMGS, 2016). Therefore this study is expected to edify the administrators to manage the international students in their HEI using the appropriate managerial skills.
