Title A study on the influences of emotional intelligence on student leadership qualities / Alice Lim Bee Chee
Abstract To be appointed/selected as a Student Leader is a much sought after profession in the educational world. The responsibility of a student leader outweighs the privileges. The significant role of a student leader has created awareness among students on the significance of choosing an effective student leader. An effective leader stay focused, takes responsibility of his actions and foster good relationship. The availability of interactive student leadership programs, courses, seminars and training have created opportunities for aspiring student leaders. This study involved a field study using both the primary and the secondary data to establish the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variables. The primary data of this study are gathered from response to questionnaires distributed to the 150 respondents studying in Perak Campus, district of Kampar. Our respondents are focused on students who are currently pursuing their studies in the university. The data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 16.0 to identify the relationship between the independent variables and dependent variable. Microsoft Excel XP software was used to establish the table and charts to present the result of the hypotheses. The analysis techniques we applied included reliability testing as demonstrated in the pilot testing, frequencies analysis, multiple regression analysis, correlation analysis and independent T-test. This research is attempted to investigate and decide whether the five factors (gender, physical attribute, self-confidence, intelligence and emotional intelligence) will significantly influence candidates in the selection of a student leader. Our results show there is significant influence on the five variables that we examined. However, there is no gender preference - male or female based on physical attributes, intelligence and emotional intelligence of the candidate except self confidence. Female respondent are more likely to select candidate who is self-confident as their choice.
