Organizational factors influencing work-life balance among middle managers in a Malaysian Multinational Food Manufacturing Company / Teoh Hui Leng

Abstract
|
This study examines the relationship between the organizational factors which influence
work-life balance and work-life balance among middle managers in a Malaysian
multinational food manufacturing company. This study also examines whether gender has
moderating effect on the relationship between organizational factors and work-life balance
among middle managers. Fifty male middle managers and fifty female middle managers from
XYZ Food Manufacturing (M) Sdn. Bhd. participated in the study. Data were gathered by
survey questionnaire that consisted of a series of scales to examine the various variables in the study. The result suggested that work schedule flexibility, job autonomy, organizational time expectation, manager support and colleague support have positive correlation with work-life balance. The most significant factor to influence work-life balance among the middle
managers was job autonomy while work schedule flexibility is the weakest factor to influence
work-life balance among the middle managers. Gender does not have a moderating effect on
the relationships between work-life balance and work schedule flexibility, job autonomy and
manager support. Gender only moderates the relationship between colleague support and
work-life balance. The findings of this study indicate that the organization should provide
support for middle managers to strike a balance between work and family responsibilities if
the organization‟s long term goals are to be achieved.
