Title A study on the effectiveness of electronic communication in Multi National Corporations in Bayan Lepas, Penang. / Ng Lee Foong
Abstract The advancement of electronic technology communication has changed the method of organisation communication, especially global companies. Electronic communication helps to reduce many obstacles which occurred in conventional communications. The primary objective for this study is would like to have an insight how effectiveness of the electronic communication in the organisation communication. Electronic communication is become common in today communication world, it gradually takes over the face-to-face communication. Many researchers have raised their concerns that electronic communication has reduced the human touch element in a communication between each other. As such, it is important to know what are the factors affected the quality and effectiveness of electronic communication. Theoretical frameworks have been developed. Factors affected the effectiveness of the electronic communication are the independent variable, whereas the dependent variable is the effectiveness of electronic communication. Total five (5) factors had been identified that could affect the effectiveness of the electronic communication. Data analysis and findings showed the all the independent variables have significant positive relationship with the dependent variable. They are conciseness, concreteness, socio economic background, channels of communication and tools of communication gives positive impact on the effectiveness of electronic communication. A few theories were identified to support the theoretical framework Media Richness Theory, Media Synchronicity Theory and ICT Succession Model. Quantitative research strategy is employed for this study. A total of 135 questionnaires have been distributed via email, smart-phone apps to four (4) MNCs in Bayan Lepas, Penang namely German Medical Company, BOSCH, OSRAM and DELL, and 100(74%) of questionnaires are usable. The tools of analysis for this study namely are Factor Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, Multi- regression analysis and reliability analysis to analyse the collected data. Results and findings of the analysis showed a significance positive relationship for each independent variables and dependent variable. The limitation for the research is due to small sample size, and the communication policy of the each company may different from each others. The study has provided an insight for the users of the electronic communication to relook into the quality and effectiveness of the electronic communication rather for convenience but also to access the benefit that may find in face-to-face communication in workplace.
