Title Study on using the e-learning portal as a complement for higher education in Johor Bahru (JB) / Tye Ling Lee
Abstract While most of the Western higher education institutions implementing e-learning and left behind Asian countries which still highly depend on traditional learning, it is important for the Johor Bahru (JB) higher education institutions to start consider if implementing elearning will be a good decision to be made in the coming future. The purpose of this research was to act as a guideline for JB higher education institutions that are considering the implementation of e-learning portal, through achieving the objectives of the study -- study the JB learners’ acceptability towards elearning portal to complement traditional learning, and determine the critical success factors for a success e-learning portal. In this research, one hundred of 18 years old and above current and potential e-learners were selected from the Johor population as samples, through judgment sampling. Each sample was personally administered by the researcher to answer set of questionnaire that helps the researcher to gather the learners’ opinions and expectations towards e-learning portal. Data collected through questionnaires were computed by using SPSS system, for the subject of the study. Independent samples T-tests were computed to determine if the preset hypotheses are valid. The tests were considered significant at the 0.05 level. From the T-tests, three out of four hypotheses were proven valid. Besides, frequency tests and percentage tests also carried out to study the learners’ acceptability on e-learning portal and to determine e-learning portal’s critical success factors. The findings showed that e-learning portal is highly accepted by current and potential e-learners, while time-saving, user-friendly, and supportive level are critically decide the success of the e-learning portal. Although the samples were selected through judgment sampling, there are few limitations faced during the field survey; namely, some respondents do not understand the meaning of ‘currently taking e-learning course’ and need the explanation from the researcher, some respondents unwilling to participate and thus reducing the response rate, and some respondents in e-learning business which influenced the accuracy of the answers. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that JB higher education institutions to put in effort on reducing the material downloading problems and the portal loading problems, to ensure the critical success factor – time saving can be achieved. Lastly, the researcher also suggested a future research to be carried out by focusing on those private/public institutions that are currently using e-learning portal as part of the teaching method.
