Title Job satisfaction of paramedics working in Malaysia's north east district health department / Alexander a/l Selvam
Abstract Job satisfaction of paramedics is important. There are enough literatures with evidence to describe how job satisfaction affects individuals and the organizational as a whole. Even though there are studies on job satisfaction among medical staffs in Malaysia, these are limited as they are confined to doctors, nurses and assistant medical officers. This study explores the job related factors significant to paramedics‟ job satisfaction, and compares the satisfaction levels of Assistant Environmental Health Officers, Assistant Medical Officers, Staff Nurses, Community Nurses and Public Health Assistants. A cross-sectional survey of paramedics was conducted in the North East District Health Department, Penang, Malaysia using a self-administered questionnaire. Both univariate and bivariate statistical methods were used to assess the job related factors significant to job satisfaction and to further explore the differences in satisfaction levels between different groups of paramedics. A total of 140 paramedics took part in this study. The findings revealed that co-worker has a positive influence on paramedics‟ job satisfaction. Secondly Staff Nurses and Community Nurses category of paramedics had better level of job satisfaction when compared to the other three groups of paramedics. This study has shown that co-worker has an important role to paramedics‟ job satisfaction working in the North East District Health Department and there are differences in levels of job satisfaction among them. Health managers and supervisors should take into consideration of these factors and take appropriate measures to increase the job satisfaction of the other three groups of paramedics to improve the quality of service of the health department.
