Title A study of the current job hopping trend in manufacturing industries in Bayan Lepas, Penang / Tang Siew Chee
Abstract As a Globalization and high technology takes its era more people are scouting for job and job hopping has become a current trend in this turn of the century. Job hopping has been a major concern for the employers as higher turnover leads to more investment on orientation, training and retraining of employees resulting in low output and loosing brand name in the market. Thus employer need to look into the factors leading to high turnover and make attempts to arrest the phenomena. This study looked into factors of why current trend of workers job hopping, help employers to understand more of their employees which includes the Generation Y, 61% of them are the current workforce to ensure their needs, personal desire are fulfilled up to their expectation to prevent further and future job hopping and turmoil in this Industry. The present study went through a survey method collected on views of 150 employees on 6 dimensions namely job hopping, employee satisfaction, career growth, work environment, personal interest and company policy. The findings were Satisfaction and Work Environment are the three major factors that were proven and have influence Job hopping in the manufacturing companies in Bayan Lepas, Penang. Whilst Personal Interest and Company does has no influenced. It could be there limited participants and the scope of sending the survey is not wide enough resulting personal Interest and Company Policy not influencing job hopping currently. Recommendations is to look into more variables such as employee empowerment, flexible work hours etc. Perhaps more areas required to be covered like the whole of Malaysia which may reflect the actual trend of job hopping!
