Title Factors influencing the income of grab drivers: a case study among Johor Bahru drivers / Tan Shui Mei.
Abstract There are 2 major form of transportation, namely private transport and public transport. Most major and growing cities in the world has mass public transportation such as trains and coaches whereas others rely on buses and public taxis to commute within and around the city. The deteriorating service standards and condition of public buses and taxis in Johor Bahru has resulted in the emergence of ride-sharing platforms where it allows private vehicles undertaking public ride engagement. Grab is among the pioneer in this new concept of transportation where it allows passengers to download an application on to a mobile device or smartphones, and submit transport request through it. With internet connectivity, it allows the app to detect your location, identify the destination and calculate fare charges. So impressive it is that it even detects and recommend suitable route to benefit both driver and passenger. Ever since it started its services, Grab has seen its popularity grow surpassing the conventional public buses and taxi services. Its drivers’ portal has been increasing steadily and the over-whelming acceptance has resulted Grab becoming an essential or preferred way of transport for passengers. However, as Grab continues to grow locally, there are certain factors that are influencing or impacting driver’s income. This study examines the factors affecting Grab drivers’ income in Johor Bahru and it allows Grab and its drivers a better understanding on the factors which are affecting drivers’ income, and possible solution to the concerns. Having conducted research involving current Grab drivers, it is commonly agreed that the factors are the increasing population of Grab drivers in locally, competition among taxis, buses, private vehicles and other forms of public transportation, tightening of government regulations and Grab’s drive towards monopolising the ride-sharing market which could eventually leads to reduction in the incentive schemes. Based on the findings from this research, it is evident that the afore-mentioned factors are significant in affecting the income of Grab drivers in Johor Bahru. For example, the increase of Grab drivers’ population causes stiff competition which could eventually lead to over-supply of drivers in a certain location. Findings from this research cold also pre-empt Grab and its drivers the potential obstacle in their co-existence and prepare suitable mitigation plan.
