Abstract
|
The ability to achieve communicative competence in writing is a major facet of language development and academic success among students at all levels of the education system. However, the ways to master essay writing skills are a problem that is faced by students in secondary schools especially in argumentative writing. This has been consistently shown by the students in Pei Hwa High School in their English mid-year examination. The purpose of this study is to investigate challenges which students face in learning argumentative essay writing skills in Pei Hwa High School. Besides that, this study also investigates the methods that can be used by teachers to improve students’ argumentative writing skills. The target population is Senior Middle One students; there are 126 students in this study. In addition, stratified random sampling is used in selecting the group for group interview. The data is collected in the form of a questionnaire for all the students and the interview is scheduled for 34 selected students. The validity and reliability of the instruments were established through a pilot study from the input of experts in the area of study. In this study, quantitative and qualitative methods were used. Quantitative data collected was analysed using descriptive statistical techniques, which include percentages and frequencies while qualitative data was thematically analysed.
