Title A study on e-collaboration dynamics : an empirical assessment on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) / Ang Yue Leong
Abstract The purpose of this study is to assess Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) determinants towards E-collaboration dynamics. The E-collaboration dynamics in this study are business community, responsiveness, managerial awareness, infrastructure capabilities, perceived benefits and strategic planning. The objective of this study is also to determine the mediating impact of SME’s strategic planning towards E-collaboration. The triangulation method was applied for this study. Data from 48 out of 150 emails (based on cross sectional approach) through email survey questionnaires were collected for the quantitative study. A comparative case study based on face-to-face interviews with top management from three companies was also conducted. All respondents are SMEs in the state of Penang, Malaysia. The empirical study on field SMEs was conducted by applying in-depth SPSS analytics. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using AMOS software, was applied to test the intervening effects of strategic planning between SME capabilities determinants and E collaboration. Demographic profiles were also analysed to determine their moderating effects on the variables. The findings revealed that five SME determinants (i.e. business community, responsiveness, managerial awareness, infrastructure capabilities and strategic planning) were significant towards the dynamics of E-collaboration. Managerial awareness and business community were found to be more directly significant towards E-collaboration whereas all SME capabilities tested were significant towards strategic planning. Further findings suggested that strategic planning has a strong mediating effect between SME capabilities determinants and E-collaboration. The demographic profiles have no significance towards E-collaboration but company age and number of employees were significant towards strategic planning. Analysis on the demographics suggested that industry type has a moderating effect on the level of total sales towards strategic planning. The managerial predictive model indicated that business community and infrastructure capabilities are significant predictors to strategic planning in order to assimilate E-collaboration. The case triangulation study revealed that the most significant SME capabilities towards E-collaboration are business community, responsiveness and managerial awareness. SMEs main business are in the local market and the SMEs rely on E-collaboration via emails and Internet for business communication and basic buy-sell transactions. The scope for this study is based on a small sample from Penang, Malaysia. Therefore, caution must be exercised before these findings are applied to other studies. The findings from this study meet the overall research objectives and provide solutions for the problem statements of insufficient in-depth study, determining the best-fit criteria and establishing an empirical model on E-collaboration among SMEs.
