Title Factors affecting employee tardiness : an empirical study on the Malaysian quality control laboratories / Ong Yu An
Abstract Employee tardiness appear to be a continuous unsolvable problem that doesn‟t seem to be getting better (in spite of the many ways the organization try to curb this problem). Many Quality Control laboratories report a high count on employee tardiness which eventually leads to morale drag down, absenteeism, employee turnover, loss of will to perform for the company, etc. Tardiness usually start with experienced employees and it is always the first sign of trouble, then an unexcused absence or two thus, leading to the employee just doesn‟t show up (absenteeism). Being a few minutes late to work every now and then may not seem like a big deal to the employee, but it can hurt an employee‟s career prospects especially in work climates such as in the Quality control laboratory where punctuality is valued. Despite the necessity for organizations to monitor employee tardiness, there has been very little empirical work done in this field to evaluate the determinants of employee tardiness in the Quality Control laboratory (QC lab). QC laboratories relies a lot on their employees‟ skills, expertise and knowledge on the part of analyses of samples to comply to strict laboratory guidelines for the prevention of accidents and also to meet customer deadlines and to maintain an efficient quality control laboratory status. By knowing the factors affecting employee tardiness, QC laboratories will be able to understand the situation and come up with new solutions which have the potential to reduce employee tardiness to a bare minimum level that will benefit the both the employers as well as the QC Laboratories as a whole. From the analyses of the survey data, it is shown that the factors that affect employee tardiness are organizational commitment, work incentives, employee attitudes, importance for time and work challenges. The research seeks to estimate the relationship between employee tardiness and several factors affecting it.
