Abstract
|
Organizational are getting increasingly aware of the importance of good environmental
systems. As at 31st December 2010, 870 organizations in Malaysia have been certified
with ISO14001 EMS, but only 7.2% from “rubber and plastic” industries. Malaysia’s
export of rubber products contributes RM10,588.44 millions to the nation, in which it is
occupying as world leader in gloves, condom, catheter etc. This study will focused on
the effect of implementation of ISO14001 Environmental Management System on
rubber-based manufacturers. It is to determine the reasons of EMS implementation, the
challenges faced and their effect to the business performance. The researcher has studied
five important respondents’ profile – number of employees, paid-up capital, status
ownership, certification obtained and position of the respondents. It was found that
number of employees is not independent from the types of challenges faced, and the
effect of EMS implementation. On the other hand, paid-up capital is not independent
from the effect of the business performance, while status ownership is independent from
all the three dependent variables. Based on the 30.2% response rate from the survey
questionnaire sent, it was reported the most important reasons for rubber-based
manufacturers implementing ISO14001 EMS is improved corporate image, increase
customer satisfaction and improve employees’ morale and awareness. However, reduced
operation costs, improve relation with vendor and increase on time delivery seem to be
the least contribution factors. 54 respondents quoted following standard procedures is
the major challenges, followed by workers commitment and middle management
commitment. The least challenges go to the documentation and implementation of
corrective action. This could be explainable as Malaysia currently reported
approximately 1.9 millions foreign workers spread across sectors such as manufacturing
(30%), construction (19%), etc. with glove sector alone employs up to 35,000. With the
amount of foreign workers employed in the industry and the low educational
background, no doubt that getting them to “following the procedures” at work place and
to make them committed to work is a major challenges to the manufacturers. Finally
self-assessed evaluation from the respondents agreed that ISO14001 EMS helped to
enhance the reputation of the company and improved its chance of successfully selling
in international markets, were the top of impact of EMS implementation. The means of
the composite scores for 14 dimensions on the effect of EMS were re-categorised into
three categories: low, medium and high. The result of re-categorising disclosed that
98.1% rubber-based manufacturers agreed that the implementation of ISO14001 EMS
has significant effect to their business performance
