An exploratory study on gender bias in the UPSR English language examination for Chinese national-type primary school / Chan Kar Weng

Abstract
|
Gender bias is somewhat reflected by linguistic expressions and pictorial depictions.
By examining these items, the status of a gender can be determined. Many sexist
phenomena have displayed that women are always the victims of prejudice. To
identify sexism in assessment, textual and pictorial representations contained in the
2007 – 2013 UPSR English Language examination papers designed for the Chinese
National-Type Primary Schools were content analysed. The results of the nonparametric
binomial test reported fair representation for two aspects, namely gender
visibility and gender role with a p-value > .05. By using the same test coupled with
the chi-square test, gender priority and activeness were found to be in favour of men
and private sphere biased towards women with a p-value < .05. Qualitatively, the
content analysis revealed that females tended to be depicted as being weak, focusing
on shopping and trivial items. Males on the other hand were pictured to be helpful
persons despite being portrayed as weak and bad persons in some instances. In the
survey, mean rank values ranging between 2 and 3 were obtained from 43 English
language teachers through a 5-ranked scale for the five above-cited aspects. The
survey items were also compared between two cohorts of teachers with different
academic qualifications. The independent t-test provided sufficient evidence to prove
that the perceptions of these cohorts were significantly different towards gender
visibility, activeness, private sphere and gender role. From the telephone interviews,
most of the interviewees expressed that they had been too used to seeing and hearing
sexist expressions which sounded normal to them. They tended to view certain sexist
portrayals as realities. This study infers that a change is needed to reverse sexism in
the examination papers as well as the misconceptions cherished by the teachers.
